A message on behalf of 
Interim President John Peck
 
Dear Rotarians,
 
Events of the past week included the great talk by Professor Gary Lit Ying Loong (see below) and of course the Bunnings BBQ fundraiser for our Local Community.
 
This coming Monday 4th December is the Barefoot Bowls social event which will replace our normal Tuesday meeting.
 
Last year's Lawn Bowls event was very successful and a lot of fun, so let's have a repeat of that.
Your families and grandchildren are all very welcome to attend.  Children 12 & under are FREE.
 
Adults $30 per head which includes bowls and shared platters of food.  DRINKS at BAR prices.
 
Please use the link on the left side of this bulletin to RSVP, we do require attendances and declines before 12 noon on Monday 4th December.

It is essential we know of your intention to attend or your apology.  It is very difficult to organise event numbers and catering when many of our members fail to advise of their intentions. 
It is not an easy task so PLEASE each and every one of you, help us out.
 
There will not be a meeting on Tuesday 12th December, it is a very busy time of year for all, so it's a good opportunity to have a night off.
 
The grand finale for the year will be our Christmas Dinner on Tuesday 19th December, once again please bring your partners, families, children and grandchildren.
 
Invitations will be sent out within the next couple of days, please be sure to RSVP for yourself and your guests early to make planning a whole lot easier.

On behalf of all club members, we would like to send our very best wishes to all of you who have had or do have COVID.  Get well soon.
This is definitely a sharing experience that we would prefer not to have.

Tuesday 29 Nov 2023 was a fantastic (but equally disturbing) presentation by Professor Gary Lit Ying Loong. 

Kam in his introduction recalled his childhood and how his parents were so traumatised by the war and therefore is a subject so close to his heart.

Professor Loong outlined in the 10 - 20 year lead up to the Japanese invasion there were high class brothels, barber shops etc. that were sending information back
to Japan to plan the invasion. 
Some of the atrocities and some photos from his book along with others were featured.
How the British funded the resistance (the Malaysian Communist Party) but then had an emergency war (peace agreement reached in 1989) to eliminate communism.  

Many of us purchased his book and looking forward to reading it. It truly is a pity for all those that were not able to attend last week's meeting.
 
All proceeds from the book sales will be used to purchase one or two Peace Poles for Lyndale Secondary College.
Thanks to Prof. Garry for his very generous donation to a cause very close to his heart, 'PEACE'.


 
Two of our wonderful Bunnings BBQ volunteers, Joe & Margaret, who along with the other volunteers were very happy to be serving the community and raising funds to support the homeless and disadvantaged.
 
Sat 2 December 2023 saw another successful BBQ at Bunnings in spite of the rain and several members pulling out due to covid. 
 
The best part of the Bunnings BBQ's is always the fellowship and the two editors managing to talk about an upcoming project and plans. 
 
A HUGE thanks to all our volunteers on the day:

Our first Interact Club
at Lyndale Secondary College
It is very exciting that our relationship with Lyndale Secondary College continues to grow with great passion and enthusiasm. 
Last week, Leanne and Peter Faulkner were invited to attend the LAUNCH of the Virtual Reality Classrooms at Lyndale and what an incredible experience that was.
We will be having a 'Vocational' tour of the VR classrooms at the school in the new year.
 
Leanne & Peter will be back at the school on Wednesday 6th December at their
Presentation Night
to present the
'Rotary - Respect, Resilience & Responsibility' Awards
to 2 students from each year level (12 in total),
on behalf of our Club.
 
We are very fortunate that Lyndale S.C. is also allowing our District to hold a couple of large events at the school in February and August 2024.

Our relationship got off to a 'kick start' with a District Scholarship grant in June, 2023, which has now led to having the use of their amazing venue for our Mental Health Forum, two debating teams at MUNA and the formation of an Interact Club.
The school have received another District Grant organised by our club which will provide
FOUR disadvantaged students with textbooks & stationery for 2024, which they otherwise wouldn't have had.
 
The Lyndale Interact Club will be Chartered in the new year with 60 students.
We are very fortunate to have FOUR amazing teachers supporting the Interactors
who will meet every Friday morning to run their meetings and plan their projects.
On Tuesday Daryl Moran (District 9810 Youth Chair) and Colin Byron presented 'Interact' to the 2024 Year 12 students with an amazing Presentation and information session. 
Then on Friday morning Daryl and Leanne repeated the process with the 2024 Year 11 students.
Both sessions saw the students, completely engage, listening intently, then brainstorming and coming up with some amazing ideas for the new year.
